How to have a great solo vacation
I talked about the advantages of park touring with just two people. Today I'd like to suggest another idea: the solo trip.
Theme parks are actually perfect spots for solo vacations. There's lots to do, friendly people to chat with, and special advantages for single guests.
We've all had a lot of togetherness these past few years, so if you're itching to get away and have your own adventure, get yourself a ticket and head to the parks.
Here are some top tips for visiting Disney and Universal on your own:
1) Go at your own pace. If you want to spend all day wandering around Main Street just taking photos, go right ahead. Explore at will, stop when you get tired, eat when you're hungry.
2) Talk to the people around you. It's easy to strike up a conversation in line or with cast members. If you feel like chatting, make it happen.
3) Do the stuff your usual travel buddies don't want to do. Ride that roller coaster - or not. Check out every nook & cranny in Diagon Alley or World Showcase. Eat the food you love but the rest of your family doesn't.
4) Bring a little tripod. A small tripod works great for selfies, and it's the perfect stand for reading on your phone while you dine solo.
This is also one of the photography tips I shared last month.
5) Eat in the lounge. When it's just you, even the most expensive restaurant is a possibility. Most of Disney's table-service locations have adjoining lounges that serve the same menu as the main space. The lounge is perfect for solo diners - you can eat at the bar or a quiet table, plus a party-of-one can almost always walk right in.
6) Get a kid-size portion. If you're not traveling with that person who usually finishes your plate, consider ordering from the kid's menu. No one is going to stop you.
7) Ride Single. The biggest superpower of a solo theme park guest is Single Rider. Especially at Disneyland and the Universal Parks, the single rider queue is faster than even Express Pass or Lightning Lane. You're already by yourself, take advantage of it by jumping into that singles line whenever available.
Riding single is one of the best hacks any theme park guest can use. Whether you're traveling solo or with a group, be sure to know how single rider works at your park.
